Get To Know Your Hosts

Welcome to our Victorian B&B, where history meets a touch of humour, and every detail tells a story. We’re Ash and Ann-Marie, two kindred spirits with a passion for antiques, geology, and all things charmingly old. Ash has an eye for stones and artifacts, while Ann-Marie can’t resist a beautiful historic home (especially one with a story of its own) and food…especially baking. Together, we’re here to make your stay as memorable as it is comfortable, with plenty of homemade treats, cozy rooms, and maybe a quirky detail or two (yes, we’ll explain the silk flowers). So, what’s it like to stay here? We thought we’d answer a few questions you might have—ones we’d want to ask, anyway, if we were in your shoes.

Why did you decide to start a B&B, and why Karamana Homestead?
We like old things, and maybe that’s why we married later in life! Ash’s parents ran this Victorian homestead as a B&B for years, so when we took over, it was about continuing their dream in our own way. This house has character, charm, and a few creaky floorboards, and we fell in love with it all. We like to think of it as a home that’s seen a lot of history, and we’re here to add our chapter (and invite others to join us in writing theirs).

What do you both bring to the B&B experience?
Ash is your go-to for all things local—whether you’re after a bit of town history, looking for the best hidden spots to explore, or curious about the unique geology of the area. With a background in geology, archaeology and a lifelong love of rocks, he’s always happy to share a story or point out something interesting, whether it’s a historic site or a fossil underfoot.

As for Ann-Marie, she's all about creating a warm and welcoming space. She has a deep love for heritage homes and a soft spot for thoughtful details—like fresh-baked treats and handmade touches throughout the house. It's those little things that help make your stay feel extra special.

What’s your favourite part of hosting guests?
We love that every guest brings their own unique energy to the house. It’s fun meeting people from around New Zealand and other parts of the world, hearing about their travels, and sharing our stories too. And we get to make people feel at home in a place we love—that’s the best part. Plus, Ann-Marie is always looking for an excuse to bake something new to try on the guests!

How would you describe a stay here?
Think of it as staying in your most charming relative’s house—if that relative was an eccentric Victorian with a passion for antiques. Expect history in every corner, thoughtful comforts, and the quiet of the Coromandel. Guests often arrive as strangers, but we like to think they leave as friends.

What makes Coromandel a must-visit?
Coromandel is perfect for travellers who love both the land and the sea, whether you’re a hiker, a beachcomber, or just someone who enjoys a quiet escape. Ash can tell you about the geological gems hidden in the area (in detail), while Ann-Marie can recommend the best spots for soaking up the views and exploring the town.

What’s the deal with the artificial flowers? Why not use fresh ones?
Ah, the flowers! There’s a bit of Victorian tradition behind that choice. The Victorians loved their silk flowers, and they were known to gift delicate, handmade paper blooms. For us, it’s partly about keeping that tradition alive, but also about enjoying the real flowers in the garden where they belong. We’re lucky to have a beautiful garden here, and we’d rather keep it blooming outside where guests and the bees can enjoy it in full colour. Plus, our silk flowers don’t need watering—Ash calls that a win!
